The Privacy Shop helps New Zealanders to enhance their internet security and privacy by making it easier to access and learn about privacy protecting software. We believe the world should set on privacy as a default and that privacy is security.

It should be said that the software choices we promote are not aimed at evading the law or government surveillance. Those are political matters which were largely decided in the 2014 election when the New Zealand population voted for ‘big brother’. The difference is that while more than fifty percent of Parliament are in favour of mass surveillance, each person can make their own decision on how to deal with commercial surveillance and internet security. The options promoted here are aimed at retarding the amount of information that is being gathered without knowledge or informed consent by non government entities and improving computer security in general.

Hopefully The Privacy Shop will help you in dealing with some of the intrusive tactics that are being used to target individuals on the Internet. If you have a way or ideas on how to improve the shop then please contact us.

Using The Privacy Shop

The simplest way to use The Privacy Shop is to use it just like any other shop. Add products to your basket, enter an email address at the checkout and then receive an email with the links to download the software.

  1. Add the software to your cart.
  2. Enter an email address.
  3. Download from the email links.

This also has the benefit that you can enter somebody else’s email to send them links to software you have chosen for them. You can forward the email around your friends and family. Please do. The more people who are protected on-line, the closer to privacy by default we will become.

Internet Security – Protecting your privacy while using the shop

This website is set up to be moderately privacy friendly. You may have noted the lack of embedded videos, Google advertisements, or payment providers. There should be no trackers attached to the site at all and please, do contact us if you do find one.

Although the site does not sell anything directly to you, it uses affiliate links in its emails in order to create income. The general rule is that if it has a price then there will contain an affiliate link for the product. Clicking on an affiliate link will connect you to the providers server and in the process they will gather data about your use of the link. Unfortunately we have no power to enforce our Privacy Policy outside the bounds of the shop. The process is like this,

  1. Visit The Privacy Shop (Covered by the Privacy Policy)
  2. Add product to list (Covered by the Privacy Policy)
  3. Email list to yourself (Covered by the Privacy Policy)
  4. Receive email and click on link (Not covered by the Privacy Policy)

You have the right to ask for a copy of any personal information we hold about you, and to ask for it to be corrected if you think it is wrong. If you’d like to ask for a copy of your information, or to have it corrected or deleted, please contact us.

If you wish to be more privacy default or increase your internet security while using the shop then The Privacy Shop suggests using TOR and a fake email address such as Guerrilla Mail. This will not help with clicking on an affiliate link in an email. It will only obscure your IP address and email address. If you wish to avoid clicking an affiliate link then search for the product in a search engine such as Duck Duck Go or Startpage.
